Lola Tech helped launch a localised version of HERO® in Tokyo, delivering a Japanese version of the supporting data analytics web application. Conversations were extracted via CSV files and the existing product UI was written in React. The service was written in TypeScript, using the Koa framework.
HERO® is a world leader in conversational commerce whose app offers shop assistants the ability to send photos, videos and make video calls directly from the shop floor; giving shoppers the confidence they need to buy, and making them less likely to return items.
Lola Tech delivered a localised Japanese version of the supporting data analytics web application for them, to allow stores to manage their teams and oversee and support the launch of the product in Tokyo.
Conversations were extracted via CSV files and the existing product UI was written in React whilst the service that serves the translations was written in Koa; both of them make use of TypeScript. While serving the right language is based on the user’s browser languages preference, when developing the solution we had a few things in mind like the ability to later add a language switcher and trying to make the translations themselves as humanly readable as possible to make sure they remain manageable as the system grows.
The challenges faced by Lola Tech included preserving the backwards compatibility of exported data, with custom date formats across the application using the Luxon and Moment libraries. Date formatting, as well as pluralisation rules, differ greatly between Japanese and English; great care was needed when structuring the keys and translations to ensure that the UI reads correctly in both languages.
This project was delivered on time and on budget and was the first of many. When asking the HERO® exec whether they'd recommend Lola Tech they said "Yes, without hesitation... The communication from senior management and the delivery team were excellent.... Working with Lola Tech meant we could deliver these items with minimal oversight from our team; keeping our roadmap on track and allowing us to layer in other items as needed."
