A startup programme set to shake up the way the rail industry approaches customer service brought together aspiring tech companies in Birmingham at the end of last year.
Led by London Midland, a 12 week initiative and first of its kind for the rail industry in Europe, selected ten budding tech startups to revitalise the way train operating companies engage with their users.
Patrick Verwer, Managing Director of London Midland, described the inspiration for the programme stating, “We are a service industry. All we should worry about is how we can make it better for our customers”.
With the aim of creating ‘simply better journeys’, the participants spent 3 months exploring the fundamental problems facing the rail industry and uncovered a number of key opportunities to enhance customer experience. As well as facilitating introductions to the all-important rail decision makers, London Midland gave the startups access to their customer database to help with product validation and proposition refining.
Culminating in a Demo Day in October, the startups presented their innovative solutions to an audience of over 200 rail experts. Lola Tech, a travel technology enterprise, took to the stage with their conversational interface concept aimed at improving communication between the rail providers and their customers. Following lengthy deliberations, they were eventually selected as the winners.
